The essence of Summer
Summer. Growing up, we all loved summer, and the sense of freedom that came with it. As a kid, I remember looking forward for Summer. When school finally ended and we had no responsibilities. Summer meant endless ice-creams, mangoes, lemonades, sleepovers, swimming pools, playing around in the neighbourhood all day and watching more tv that we usually were allowed to. It brought out the true spirit of childhood. It allowed us to be carefree like a kid should be.
For a few years, my summers looked like what a typical summer would look like- it was fun and colourful and worth waiting all year for. It was picture perfect. But somewhere along the way, that picture faded and summer was no longer as colourful. It’s only for a few years of your life that you get to be free all summer. And then you grow up and so do your responsibilities. First you go to high school, then to college and then you start working. Summer vacation goes from being two months long to two weeks and finally no vacation at all. And that’s life.
Yes, it is sad but we get used to it, and eventually accept it. And now, it might hit you that it’s not just about summer. It’s about how fast everything changes and how fast we need to move on before we even get the time to acknowledge it. But hey, if you think about it, the whole essence of summer is not lost! We still relive it every now and then through our memories and the little stories that we pass on, that take us back in time and remind us of just how fortunate we were to have had such an eventful childhood. And what’s the proof? Well, just look at faces of your parents and grandparents, aunts and uncles, light up as they tell us the stories of their past.
